Students really had to stick with this long project, where photo realism and creativity were combined to give a symbolic image of self. Here are more finished examples, and feel free to visit the art work the first week in Jan, it's all still up from the art show!! Students have been working incredibly hard on their self-portrait projects. The project was set up so that one side of the portrait is a image of their exterior self, and the right side of their portrait visually interprets their personalities - or the interior self. Students had to use the grid method to draw the left side in a photo-realistic way. The other side was up to them! Many were inspired by the zen tangles that we had worked on, and incorporated this technique. We will have a critique next week to discuss and ask questions about the work. It will be interesting to hear how they present their pieces! Below are a few examples of finished work. Our next project is a portrait piece where students will be drawing their profiles in two styles. One is based on the photorealism style of Chuck Close. We watched a short video about the artist, and viewed many examples of his amazing portraits. The other will be symbolic in imagery, and should represent who students are on the inside. Students use the grid technique that Chuck Close uses to attain the highest degree of realism. This technique requires a great amount of focus to observe all the miniscule details that make up a face. Check back soon for in-progress photos!!
