Look below at the slideshow of Masquerade! The 6th Grade had a blast creating these masks and photos for our display at the art show. Students have been in the planning stages of their next project the Ottson Masquerade! We looked at pieces from Saul Steinberg's, "Masquerade" series to get inspired. Saul Steinberg was a cartoonist and illustrator best known for his work for The New Yorker Magazine. Steinberg took photos of models dressed up with brown paper bags on their heads showing a cartoonish face. The faces showed some expression or emotion and the set up for the shot was usually very ordinary. The kids are working in small groups and planning the entire thing themselves, I will be there to take the photo. I will post all the photos when I am done, and they will also be printed and on view on December 17th...at our ART SHOW!!! (6-8 PM @ the Ottoson). All 6th Grade students are required to bring in a brown paper shopping bag by the end of this week. Students have been asked to TRY to find one that does not have any type of print or image on at least one side of the bag. The bag can be a little smaller or a little larger than a regular shopping bag. We will be drawing on one side of the bag, so the blanker the better!
Students have been working with found objects to create their sculptures...and they look incredible! The amount of focus that 6th Graders put into this project is amazing. The kids are having so much fun going "shopping" in the bags that I've collected...many kids will need to bring in more from home. I've told them to seek out "junk drawers" in their homes, and to ask parents before taking anything! These works will be displayed at our December show!! HOMEWORK: Students are supposed to be documenting their designs and continued ideas in their sketchbooks. Students have been introduced to the theme for our next project, the Found Objects Creatures. Everyone will be drawing and planning in their sketchbooks this week. Students are also REQUIRED to bring in a plastic shopping bag with at least 3 found objects/recyclables that they may be able to use in their piece by early next week at the latest. These bags should be labeled with the student's name.
Students need to bring in a bag of at least 3 items that could be used in a found object sculpture project. These items could include, plastic bottles, paper towel rolls, small plastic toys, fabric, bubble wrap, old jewelry.... See the Wish List page for more ideas! Your found objects bag is due by Friday, Oct. 4 |
